A great series, but some flaws with the DVD

This is not for no reason that Little House on the Prairie was nominated 17 times at the Emmy Awards and 3 times at the Golden Globes. No, the tv show itself is simply a milestone in regards to family entertainment. The wonderful series ran between 1974 and 1983. The sixth season is a great season, just as entertaining as the previous seasons.

Overall, you will love the sixth season of LHOTP, which ran from 1979 to 1980. This season’s most memorable event is Laura falling in love with Almanzo, who doesn’t know she even exists, which give it extra spice! It is also interesting to note the episode of Annabelle, where they deal with a delicate issue : loving someone who is overweight for what they are inside and not outside.

However, because of some flaws from the DVD, while the show itself deserve a 5 stars, Little house on the Prairie season 6  the DVD is certainly no 5 stars. Some major flaws from the DVD include mainly unwanted cuts. While they are small, they are noticeable for any fan of the series. Fan around the world criticize it, they want the unedited version, the aired version, not the edited version for DVD.

Despite those few annoyances, Little House on the Prairie season 6 is a great season to own and to share with your family.

Comment

Little House on the Prairie season 3 ran from September 27 1976 to April 4 1977. The third season is far more deep than the first two and the stories address much more mature topics. This is due to the fact that media relentlessly critiqued the shows as being too way “sugary” and “sweet”. In response to those critics, show star and executive producer Michael Landon decided to bring the show up a notch by giving more depth to the scenario and the content.

More challenging material is brought to the stories, and throughout the third season, topics such as peer pressure, sibling rivalry, near-death illness, suicide, violence, racism, hatred are addressed. In spite of this, no matter how deplorable and tragic life in Walnut Grove is, the show give a poignant message about the importance of family, friendship and faith.

The third season is filled with 1080 minutes of fabulous tales and stories that portray the misfortunes, the valiance, the care for each other and loyalty, human spirit, and a few more trivial scenes from the Ingalls family and Walnut Grove residents.

Unlike season 1 and 2, season 2 has some minor downsides. First, you may notice, if you are an eager fan of Little House, that there are a few missing scenes, that transitions between scenes with commercials are sometimes not smooth and that two episodes are out of order. However, you will be happy with the quality of the image as the show was very well restored. Overall, the third season of Little House is a wonderful piece of history to own and to show your children. And after season 3, you will not wait much longer before you order season 4!

Little House on the Prairie DVD

The book

Published in 1935, Little House on the Prairie is a children’s book, the first of the Little House series written by Laura Ingalls Wilder. The Little House series is not an autobiography, but a series of novels based on Laura’s memories of her childhood in the United States prairies during the late 19th century.

Screen adaptation

During the 70’s, the popular children’s book was adapted to the TV. The Little House series-based show was aired on NBC between 1974 to 1983. Although the teleseries is a rather loose show of the books, it contains the major elements of Laura Ingalls’ books and borrows many of the storylines. For nearly a decade, the TV series Little House on the Prairie won the heart of millions of viewers and was one of the few successful low-running family shows. Nearly 30 years the very first launch of the show, in 2003, Little House on the Prairie was successfully transfered to DVD. Little House on the Prairie DVD is now the number one seller in televised dramas on DVD.

The Story

The TV series follow the lives of the Ingalls family, which consist in Charles the father (played by Michael Layton), Caroline the mother (Karen Grassle), Laura the main character (played by Melissa Gilbert), Carrie, Mary and then Grace and later during the show, three adopted children Albert, James and Cassandra. The Ingalls are a simple farming family who decided to settle near the town of Walnut Grove, on the banks of Plum Creek during the late 1800s.

Review by Julia Barns – The best and most touching family show ever made

I simply love this series, just like millions of other people. And the reasons are clear and simple : first, every episode provide some the story lines that provide useful and sensible lessons about life in life, and second,  we simply love the show for the remarkable  interpretations and work by the cast (both the main cast and the guests).

This brilliant show bring us to a wide range of emotions and is probably one of the most entertaining show in its category (family shows). If you watch Little House on the Prairie DVD, you will laugh, cry, become thoughtful and even be taken by surprise on some of the episodes. You will be touched by the closeness of the family, the dear moments between Charles Ingalls (beautifully played by writer Michael Landon) and Caroline Ingalls, the sweet love between Laura and her love interest(s).

Little House on the Prairie DVD is a box set you should own and which you can share with every generation in your family. – Julia Barn for Little House on the Prairie DVD.

Comment

By season 2, the personalities of the characters are well-established and after watching the full first season, the viewers feel like part of the Ingalls family. As you watch the show, it is interesting to see the characters grow. But the biggest joy is probably to see their bonds and relationships becoming stronger. It is obvious that the cast has created a great relationship which makes the shows even better. Little House on the Prairie season 2 is a great dvd set that, just like in the first season, are perfect to share with the new generation as the stories are timeless. A great dvd box set for hours of viewing pleasure and, this, without the commercials!

Little House on the Prairie season 2 totals 18 hours back to back and ran from 1975 to 1976. There are 21 episodes in total on 6 DVDs. The storyline goes from witty to heart racking but all of the episodes will definitely move you. For example, in the first episode of season 2, ‘The Richest Man in Walnut Grove’, is a great episode full of great social statements (money does not buy happiness, you should be respectful of all workers regardless of their job, teamwork is important) and contains one of the most romantic scene of the series, when Charles reassure his wife that “the only thing that he ever regretted about marrying her was that he would never again have the pleasure of asking her to be his wife” and ends it with a passionate kiss…

Season 1 and Season 2 have some of the greatest episodes and scenes of the whole series, and there is no doubt about it, Michael Landon gave attention to every little detail to make the show a real masterpiece, something that writers and producers from nowadays need to learn from.

Whether you were a big fan or are new to Little House on the Prairie DVD, you will love season 2 and make sure to keep a box of tissues close by… you may need to use it more than once!

The DVDs are great. Obviously, there is only so much you can do about the image, since the series was made in the 70’s and they were far from the high definition we are used to today. However, they at improving the quality of the picture by simply doing some color correction, and the stereo sound transfer to DVD was done perfectly! You will also love the special features that comes with the season 2 box set, which include a photo gallery of the characters, cast bios and a fun quiz! If you are thinking about offering a box set of Little House as a present, this is positively a great present as the fold out box opens nicely and the set comes with a nice brochure that lists all the episodes, what disc they are on and a brief summary of each story. Little House on the Prairie Season 2 is, no doubt, a real treasure you should own and a great present that comes at a very reasonable price for the holidays!
